Background of the Study

Teenage pregnancy remains a critical public health concern in Nigeria, with high rates in Taraba State due to early marriages, lack of sexual health education, and limited access to contraceptive services (WHO, 2024). Adolescent pregnancies often result in increased health risks, school dropouts, and economic hardship for young mothers (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024).

Reproductive health education aims to equip teenagers with knowledge about safe sexual practices, contraception, and the consequences of early pregnancies. Schools, community programs, and healthcare providers play a crucial role in disseminating this information. However, the effectiveness of reproductive health education in reducing teenage pregnancy rates in Taraba State has not been extensively studied. This research evaluates how reproductive health education influences teenage pregnancy prevention in the state.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of reproductive health education programs, teenage pregnancy remains prevalent in Taraba State. Many adolescents lack proper knowledge of contraception and the consequences of unprotected sex due to societal taboos and inadequate access to comprehensive sex education (Ogunbanjo & Bello, 2024).

A significant issue is the resistance from cultural and religious institutions that view reproductive health education as encouraging premarital sex rather than preventing unwanted pregnancies. This study assesses the impact of reproductive health education on teenage pregnancy prevention in Taraba State, identifying key barriers and potential improvements.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of reproductive health education among teenagers in Taraba State.
  2. To evaluate the relationship between reproductive health education and teenage pregnancy rates.
  3. To identify challenges hindering the effectiveness of reproductive health education.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of reproductive health education among adolescents in Taraba State?
  2. How does reproductive health education influence teenage pregnancy rates?
  3. What challenges affect the implementation of reproductive health education programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Reproductive health education has no significant impact on teenage pregnancy prevention.
  2. Cultural and religious beliefs do not significantly affect access to reproductive health education.
  3. Strengthening reproductive health education programs will reduce teenage pregnancy rates.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on adolescent girls in Taraba State and examines how reproductive health education influences teenage pregnancy prevention. Limitations include potential underreporting due to stigma and personal bias in self-reported data.
